Instrument specifications

Check the specifications behind your calculation

A trading symbol does not have one universal contract size, pip convention, minimum volume or margin rule across every broker. The values shown in a broker's contract specification or trading platform should be used for the account and instrument you actually trade.

Specifications to verify

  • Symbol and asset class, including the exact broker suffix or contract variant.
  • Contract size and whether position volume is measured in lots, units or contracts.
  • Minimum trade size, maximum trade size and permitted volume increment.
  • Tick size, tick value, pip convention and the number of decimal places used for quotes.
  • Margin calculation method, leverage limits, margin currency and any tiered requirements.
  • Commission, spread, swap/financing rate and any other account-specific charges.
  • Currency conversion method and the rate direction required by the calculator.

What this release supports

The current position-size and pip-value models are designed for linear Forex calculations using the contract size, pip size, volume rules and conversion rate entered by the visitor. The margin tool uses a simplified notional-exposure and leverage model. The website does not currently load or verify a live broker specification database, and it does not fetch market or conversion prices.

Do not assume one model fits every market

Metals, indices, shares, futures, options, cryptocurrencies and contracts for difference can use different contract multipliers, tick values, settlement currencies and margin rules. Do not use the Forex formulas for those products unless the specific instrument model and required inputs have been separately verified.

Before using a result

Open the broker's current contract specification for the exact symbol and account type. Confirm the units and conversion-rate direction, compare the result with the broker's own calculator or platform, and include costs that are not automatically included. If a required specification is unknown, do not guess it.
